Introducing the Environmental Mismatch Hypothesis!

We’ve just published a piece in Biological Reviews proposing a new idea we are calling the Environmental Mismatch Hypothesis -and we are excited to share it!

For most of human history, our biology was shaped by natural environments. But in just the last couple hundred years, industrialisation has rapidly transformed our world — faster than evolution can keep up.

Our latest article brings together emerging evidence showing that modern, industrialised environments may be hindering key biological functions linked to survival and reproduction - including fertility, immune health, cognition, physical performance and stress regulation.

In short:

·       We may be living in environments our bodies aren’t adapted for.

This has huge implications for public health, sustainability and how we design our cities. It also suggests that access to nature isn’t just “nice to have” - it may be essential for maintaining human biology.

If you are interested in evolution, health or the future of urban life, we would love for you to take a look.
